What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are screw-shaped titanium rods that are used to replace your missing tooth’s root. They are inserted into a person’s jaw bone in order to provide a strong foundation for an artificial tooth. Because the dental implant and the person’s jaw bone eventually fuse together over time, they are a permanent tooth replacement option that are known for their comfort, convenience, and durability. Best of all, they look and feel as good as one’s natural teeth.

Dental implants are a great tooth replacement option for individuals who have enough jaw bone to support them and who are healthy enough to have surgery. For a person with missing or severely damaged teeth, they offer many benefits, including:

  • Natural appearance
  • Comfort when doing normal activities, such as speaking and eating
  • Being as convenient to care for as one’s natural teeth
  • When well cared for, they can last a lifetime

Types of Teeth Implants

We offer two types of dental implants at Walnut Creek Dental:

  • Endosteal: These implants are the preferred type. They are inserted into a person’s jaw bone, which makes them quite strong and comfortable.
  • Subperiosteal: These teeth implants are used in situations when a person does not have enough jaw bone to support an endosteal implant. In these cases, the implant is inserted under the person’s gum line but above their jaw bone.

Permanent Tooth Replacement Procedure

Having dental implants placed in your mouth will take place over the course of several dental appointments. At your initial visit, one of our experienced dentists will examine your mouth and create a personalized treatment plan based on your particular oral health needs. Before having your implant procedure, he may have to remove any remaining parts of your damaged teeth. Then, he will use a local anesthetic to ensure your mouth is completely numb before inserting the teeth implant into your jaw bone.

Once the implant has been placed in your jaw, it will need to heal before moving forward. This can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks. During this time, you may be given a temporary bridge to help you eat and speak easily. When your mouth is healed, an abutment will be attached to the implant and a dental crown will be placed to complete your new smile.

Cost of Dental Implants

The cost of your dental implant procedure will depend on how many implants you need as well as what dental insurance policy you have. To learn more about what your dental insurance covers, please contact our office.
